Did you see the fireworks?

That's how A woke me this morning.

After much investigating, I discovered that he had managed to go to the outlet whose cover broke off yesterday and reach behind it and pull out some large piece of metal. In doing so, he blew the circuit and created a fireworks display in our hallway. And somehow he was completely uninjured.

I am so kicking myself. I knew he was up, but it was earlier than he was allowed to be up (it was around 6), so I stayed in bed. I yelled through my door that he needed to go back to bed, but he didn't. He could have died. All because I wanted more sleep.

I'm not sure what to do about this. Of course, DH is repairing the outlet cover tonight when he gets home. But what's to stop A from yanking it off again (he's done that before)? Should I put a hook and eye lock on his door to make sure he doesn't wander again in the early morning hours?

Whew! Scary. I cannot believe he wasn't shocked. Future prevention? I dunno . . . all I can think to do is pray hard!

This is the reason I now lock Bugaboo in his room. He gets up, wonders, does very dangerous things. I cannot tell you how many times we found him outside, naked, at 5 am. Or when he hurls glasses out of the sink. Or plays with the dryer, which he climbs into whenever I am not looking.
You cannot beat yourself up over this. He is going to do things that are unsafe. If you have to lock him in his room, so be it. You can make that room as safe as possible. I even have friends who put half doors (screen doors)on the bedroom so they can lock it.

Of course, I meant WANDERS...

I was actu ally going to suggest the screen door. My family did this when we were younger. That way we could see out, and be heard but couldn't get out.

Although the screen door sounds awesome, I'm pretty sure my kids would poke through it sooner rather than later. I too have an adventuresome child and the lock on the door is the only way I could ever actually get any sleep. Some children are naturally curious and can't stop getting into things. She actually climbed out of her crib at 10 months. Before she walked. It has been one thing after another. She is 4 now and understands most everything now so she is weary of danger, but her climbing skills are so pronounced that there is literally no where she can't get to. Scary I know. She's always on the hunt for chocolate. Could be worse I suppose. On the other hand my 3 year old is the opposite and wouldn't try to get herself anything. The other thing that happens as they get older is they let themselves outside. Which is very scary. I have an alarm on the front door that I bought for $2 and it works like a charm, especially for those of us who occasionally need a shower. Haha. Seriously, do whatever it takes to keep you sane and the kid safe. I happen to think those are my priorities.
